The Sack Race

The owners and boards of Premier League clubs can be fickle animals and it doesn’t take much for some of them to get jittery when the team goes through a rough patch.

Expectations and reality are two very different things and rarely in line in the upper echelons of club football.

Each August the new season kicks off and the press are already contemplating who will be the first manager to be sacked.

This season the ‘winner’ was Scott Parker – the cleancut cardie-clad Bournemouth manager’s team were humiliated in a 9-0 drubbing at Liverpool and within two days his belongings were being boxed up at the training ground and his parking pass revoked.

But who will be next? Aston Villa’s Steven Gerrard is the bookies’ favourite at 6/4, with Everton’s Frank Lampard close behind. But anything can change. All it takes is a couple of wins and a couple of defeats for someone else and it’s all change.

For punters, this is a volatile market and it’s difficult to get value, so be cautious.
